Weekly Question: Have you (or someone you love) served a Mormon mission?

Have you served a Mormon mission? If so, where did you serve? What impact did it have on your life, your faith? Do you have an experience you would like to share?
OR
Are you a missionary mom? We would love to hear from you, too. What’s it like being the parent of a missionary? What challenges do you face? What blessings do you experience as a parent and as a family?

——-
We have started a new feature at Mormon Women that will focus on Mormon Missionary work. We will include stories of women who are currently serving as missionaries, stories from women who served missions in the past, and also stories of what is called “member missionary” work — where Mormons seek to share the joy of their beliefs with others in their day-to-day lives. As mentioned above, stories, thoughts, and experiences from missionary moms are welcome, too! We invite those of you who have any such stories to share to send them to us at gmail, with either of the two usernames: ‘mormonwomen’ or ‘mormonwoman’. Pictures may be included and are highly recommended!

  1. I served in South America. Missionary work was hard, in some ways harder than I had expected. But my convictions about the gospel grew a great deal, especially about the fact that Joseph Smith really was a prophet, and the Book of Mormon is true.

It was also such an interesting experience to live in another culture, and to become fully engrossed in it. I cried when I left. I craved the food. I missed the customs.

I was fortunate to have the chance to go back and visit my mission along with my husband years later, who also served in South America, in a neighboring country.

Missions are amazing. I will forever be grateful that I had the opportunity and blessing to serve. It had a significant impact on my life in many, many ways.

I have to say, too, that watching the videos of women opening their mission calls brought tears to my eyes. Such a memorable, remarkable moment. The emotion is still so real, so intense, when I remember it all.

  2. I didn’t serve a mission and neither did my husband. I hope to serve a mission with him when our kids are grown.

  3. I had the awesome opportunity to serve a mission in Peru.
It was in 1982-84. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions of my life. I was almost 21 years of age, with no future husband prospects. I had already received my nursing license, and was looking for the next adventure. A bunch of us singles were at a conference. In our group, there were alot of returned missionaries, I could feel their sweet spirit and their enthusiasm, I wanted that!
So I decided to go on a mission. Even though it was many years ago, I can still remember that wonderful spiritual time in my life, especially when I read my missionary journal. I will NEVER forget my time as a missionary. My husband is also an RM, served in the Scotland mission.

  4. The Church I met when Iwas 52 years and 4 months after I was baptized. Unfortunately, neither the husband nor our children do not want to be mormon. My big dream for which I pray is that the husband became a member of the Church and we are sealing in the temple and to go on a mission together. My favorite verses are Alma 29:1-3
