Funny you should write about this!
Last night we went with grandparents to a show. When we got home and the grandparents left, one of my daughters said, "Now I know where you got your 'embarassing mother' genes!" :-)

I do not have pre-teen children, but I have pre-teen siblings. I even remember my pre-teen years. I think that experience you shared has been repeated by so many mothers and their children. I find it super sweet that you apologized to her.

I find similar things in my family. My oldest daughter is 15 and it is great to see the person she is becoming. As I let go of my preconceptions about who she is and her natural abilities, which are so different and greater than mine, shine through. It is just great to see her become a strong independent person as we work together for her greatest good.

Where I live they are militant about the kids being in school every second- they'd never let me take her out to finish her chores!
