I just found this site, and I believe I will keep logging on. I actually have become involved with the ward here in my town after missionaries visited my home about two months ago. Wow, I cannot believe it has been that long.
I was raised Baptist, and have been angry at God for a long time. I had much abuse in my childhood, which has caused a lot of conflict with my feelings toward God, given the religious context of my home coupled with abuse.. But when my son disclosed to me that he had been molested by my father seven years ago, my life collapsed. About six months ago, I started exploring every avenue I could think of for peace (“spirituality”, spiritual healers and psychics, reiki, crystals, …….)
The day before the missionaries came to my door, I was doing the dishes at my kitchen sink, and I literally yelled out to God that I gave up, I desperately needed peace, as I was feeling suicidal…….
Since then, I have been meeting with the missionaries, attending church, and just started attending their addictions recovery program….
I cannot explain the peace I feel or the pull I feel towards the church….
I know it is right and true, but I am still afraid so much of the time…..
I have enjoyed reading your site, and hope to read and learn more, and build up the courage to be baptized, as I know in my heart I should be….
Thank you
Myra, welcome! Thank you for introducing yourself, and sharing this tender story with us of your plea to Heavenly Father and the peace you are finding as you learn more about the Church. Reading your comment has brought tears to my eyes…on more than one occasion.
Please let us know if we can be of help in any way.
A scripture just came to mind as I was re-reading your comment: Joshua 1:9 : “…Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
I will be praying for you.
-Michelle
Myra, Thanks for sharing this part of your spiritual journey with us. I’m am at a loss as to what can be said about the anguish and the pain, but am so thankful to know that you now have the gospel teachings, and the recovery program which is also based on those, and a compelling witness that God is aware of you and knows your name, and that He loves you, to guide you through. Our prayers will be with you. I echo Michelle’s words in offering whatever help we can bring along the way. Let us know if you have any questions. I love the scripture she shared. She actually initiated the co-creation of this site, and it was for people like you that it has been established.
Stay in touch, and all the best along the way. I am a convert myself, and my conversion story, if you are interested, is available on mormonoutllook.com/about or youtube dot com/moregoodfoundation.
Much love,
Karen
The scripture that Michelle posted is so coincidental!
I have a friend at church who is going through rough times. Yesterday she shared her testimony of the gospel with our congregation. Before her conversion to the gospel, she came to church for the very first time in the same building we now worship in. On that day, as she sat in the fourth row back near the aisle, the missionaries handed her a scrap of paper, and Joshua 1:9 was written on it.
My friend is being blessed through very difficult trials because she has faith, she lives by her belief in John 1:9, as well as the rest of the gospel. It is such an example to me. Now I’m wondering if I should hold this scripture especially close to my heart also.
I am not a convert to the church but I WAS converted only after some very difficult times in my life when I needed to know that God is real and cares and that the Atonement was made for me. I had gotten to the point that I actually hated myself and I wanted so much to change, but I had tried so many times before and nothing worked. I begged Heavenly Father to change me. I had been taught about the atonement so many times, but now I needed desperately to know that it is real and available to everyone–even me.
After much repenting, prayer and fasting, I began to see changes in me that I never thought possible. I knew that my loving Heavenly Father was giving my life back to me. One day, I realized that I even loved me again. It was the greatest gift!!!
As you take this time to seek your Heavenly Father, you will be given promptings everyday that will guide you to each new step that you need to take. Don’t let one day go by without talking to him through prayer or listening for his answers through the holy scriptures. You will receive peace and hope that you have never imagined in your life. It will be your lifeline from heaven! It will carry you through the tough doubtings and darkness with which Satan will try to overpower you.
I hope this fills and strengthens you!
