Over the hill and valley

Hiking is a Swiss delight! Nothing is closer to nature than when you explore it with both feet. In the Aletsch Arena, 300 kilometers of hiking trails are waiting to be explored. Our tip: a nearly 15 km circular hike from Bettmerhorn via Märjelensee to Bettmeralp. First, a leisurely gondola ride at 2,647 meters above sea level to the Bettmerhorn mountain station. The route also begins comfortably, with a slight descent over the “Uf de Setzu” towards Roti Chumma. In front of the Aletsch Glacier you are approaching step by step. You hike to Märjelensee and continue to Fiescheralp along a rock-cut path with stone steps. The last stage requires a little muscle strength again and brings you back to the Bettmeralp.

On two wheels “unwanted”

It is 155 kilometers on a steel horse – with a constant view of the mountain panorama of the Valais and the Bernese Alps. The Aletsch Arena is a true mountain bike fan’s paradise. The 4,700-meter-high or 35.7 km-high Stoneman Glaciara trail from Fiesch via Fiescheralp to Märjela is particularly spectacular, where the Valais plate is awarded in the Gletscherstube Märjela. And if you don’t want to go out alone, simply book a guided bike tour. On the bicycle routes it is said: families are welcome. The region now also offers cycling courses for children and teenagers. If you are riding not only with pure muscle power, but also with electric assist, you will find many charging stations for your e-bike. Don’t miss it: there are tons of twists, rolls and jumps on the new Flowtrail Wurzenbord that await beginners and professionals alike. The approximately three-kilometer route with a height difference of almost 260 meters leads through various alpine zones and forest stretches over 100 percent of natural soil.

Nature conservation pioneer

The Pro Natura Aletsch Center is also worth visiting. There you can relax and recharge your batteries after an exhausting glacier hike or a calf-powered bike tour. The center at Villa Cassel on Riederfurka was opened in 1976 and is the first nature conservation center in Switzerland. We owe it to the noble Englishman. Sir Ernest Cassel had the villa built in the early 20th century and used it as a summer residence. After his death, the stately building was used as a hotel. Even today, guests can stay overnight and learn interesting facts about the protection of the diverse flora and fauna of the Aletsch Arena.
