When British journalist Dom Phillips and native expert Bruno Pereira went missing in Brazil, the police arrested a second suspect. The 41-year-old is due to be brought before a magistrate in the Amazon rainforest town of Atalaia do Norte after questioning, federal police said on Tuesday. Police also confiscated cartridges and an oar.

The suspect is the brother of a man who was arrested last week in connection with the disappearance of two men, according to the G1 news site. Witnesses said they saw him chasing Phillips and Pereira’s boat. Traces of blood were later found in the boat of the first suspect. Personal belongings of missing persons were also found near his home in the rainforest. However, the man denies any involvement in the case.

Philips and Pereira were last sighted on June 5

Phillips, 57, who regularly writes for the UK Guardian as a freelance journalist, and Pereira, an expert on indigenous peoples, were researching a book on violence against indigenous peoples in the Javari Valley near the Peruvian border. The two men were last seen on June 5. There are miners, poachers and drug gangs in the region.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro’s announcement on Monday that human remains were found during a search for the missing men caused a stir. However, the Brazilian federal police rejected it.
