Baccarat Rouge 540 is the name of the most popular fragrance of the year. The tremendous success cannot be taken for granted as perfumes should not have existed for a long time.
If you’ve ever got lost in Perfume Tok (so to speak in Tiktok’s perfumery department) while browsing social media in the evening, you can’t avoid it: Baccarat Rouge 540. Maison Francis Kurkdjian perfumes thanks to Google searches and Instagram hashtags. The related hashtag also collects approximately 130 million views on Tiktok.
The Heydiscount comparator chose the fragrance as the most popular this year, ahead of the classics of traditional brands such as Dior and Chanel. Originally, the fragrance should no longer be available.
Smells like a hotel?
At Tiktok, perfumes are described as “a luxury yacht vacation”, “swimming in the pool of Scrooge McDuck,” or “a fragrance worn by a pretty rich girl.”
It actually smells like something else: hotel lobby. More specifically, the one from the luxury Baccarat hotel on New York’s Fifth Avenue. When the hotel opened in 2015, perfumer Francis Kurkdjian’s star filled the fragrance with notes of burnt sugar and smoke in the bottles – there were only 250 bottles in total.
But when Kurkdjian was showered with compliments every time he wore the Baccarat Rouge 540 himself, he made the hotel’s fragrance a permanent fixture. Since then, the demand has increased year by year. Especially since Tiktok has also experienced a meteoric rise.

Because of course
Unlike many other perfumes, Baccarat Rouge 540 does not consist of natural and synthetic ingredients, but is content with the latter. So the notes of sweet strawberry and amber (you know, the infamous whale vomit that has a long tradition in perfumery) are not from the fields or the sea, respectively, but from ethylmaltol, a flavor enhancer, and amber, which is often found in perfumes is used because the natural source it is very rare and therefore expensive. But this does not mean that Baccarat Rouge is available at a bargain price: 70 ml costs as much as 270 francs.

Where is the hype?
Why is all Tiktok so crazy about the smell? Sable Yong, co-founder of the Smell Ya Later perfume podcast, suspects it’s because of its indefinability. She tells the online magazine The Cut how fascinated she was when she first encountered it: “The fragrance is not particularly floral or woody. It has an interesting, fluid vibe that isn’t too feminine. ” In addition, Rihanna – who has entire compilations of videos showing how good she smells – once praised a journalist for her perfume.
