Announcement
basic information at a glance
- The cantons are uncertain about the survival strength of the host families.
- In many places, accommodation periods for refugees will soon expire.
- Holidays are a special challenge.
About 55,000 refugees from the war in Ukraine are currently in Switzerland. About half of them live with host families.
The first refugees came here at the turn of February and March. The willingness to help the Swiss population was huge. Many have taken refugees to their homes.
War in Ukraine: housing terms are running out
In the meantime, almost three months have passed that refugees are guaranteed residence with host families. Accommodation periods are ending. Now the cantons face another obstacle.

Because: A tendency to fatigue can be observed in many host families. “Not without having someone permanently in your apartment.” This is what Miriam Behrens, director of Swiss Refugee Aid (SFH) at SRF Tagesschau, says.

Apparently, it was assumed that Ukrainian refugees had a similar culture. “But there are differences,” says Behrens. He mentions diet or raising children as an example.
“During the summer vacation of all time”
Gaby Szöllösy, secretary general of the Cantonal Social Directors’ Conference (SODK), spoke about the problem at a federal media conference in early June. The cantons are uncertain about the survival strength of the host families. It is not known how many farmers the Ukrainians want to keep.

According to Szöllösy, things could suddenly turn into a summer vacation. “The host families are slowly approaching the end of these three months – and especially during the summer holidays. The cantons must prepare to take people back into state structures if necessary. ‘
So the first cantons systematically interrogated the hosts. “So they can judge what to expect,” says Szöllösy.
Have you accepted refugees from Ukraine?
It is not known how many refugees from the war in Ukraine will need a new home this summer. The situation varies from canton to canton. “In cantons that look after their host families well and are contact persons, signs of fatigue appear more slowly,” says Miriam Behrens.
