Updated 01/24/2018 from

If you email sensitive information, including PDF files, be sure to password protect or encrypt that information. The following section provides the steps to create a password protected PDF file without purchasing Adobe Acrobat.

  • Download and install PrimoPDFa free PDF creator.
  • Open the document or image you want to create as a password-protected PDF.
  • Print the file. In the Print Assistant, change the name of your printer from “PrimoPDF” to something else and click “OK” to start the PDF creation process.
  • In PrimoPDF, select the file quality as shown in the image below, we recommend either “Print” or “Prepress” and then click the button Edit button for PDF security.
  • In the Password Security window Check the box for “Password required to open document” and enter the password you want to use and click OK.
  • Finally click on the button Generate PDF to create the password protected PDF.
  • Assistant PrimoPDF
