“They won’t happen“ (French: Ils ne passeront pas; Romanian: Pe aici nu se trece; Spanish: no pasarán) is a slogan used to express determination to defend a position against an enemy. It was best known during the Battle of Verdun in World War I by French General Robert Nivelle.
Who said they won’t pass?
Philippe Pétain (1856-1951) was a French army commander appointed in February 1917 in charge of the defense of Verdun. Pétain has orders to hold his sector, whatever it took said to have answered “Ils ne passeront pas!” (They won’t happen!).
