If you want to change your school or work email address, contact your IT department directly and discuss the purpose of the change you want. Depending on their policies, they might be able to modify it for you and configure it to your exact needs. They will advise you on your options and how best to proceed.
However, if you want to change your email address with an email provider like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail, it cannot be changed. In a way, an email address is like your home mailing address; You can’t change what you want. However, you can create a new email address if it is not already taken. If you choose to do this, you can configure your old address to forward email to your new address.
On this page we give examples of changing your email address and forwarding emails to your old address. We’ll also cover steps you can take to ensure your online presence isn’t disrupted by this change.
Creating a new address
To create a new email address, first select an email provider if you don’t plan to use the same provider. If you want to change the domain name (the part after the “@” symbol in your email address), you need to contact the email provider. For example, if you want to switch to an “@gmail.com” email address, you need to go to the Google Gmail website to create a new email address.
After you’ve created a new email address, here are some steps you can take to resolve any confusion between you and your email contacts.
note
If you need to change the name or personal information associated with your email account, you must log into your email account and update your account profile.
Bulk email to friends and family
To ensure you continue to receive emails from friends and family, we recommend that you send them an email letting them know your new address.
One of the disadvantages of this method is that you often forget to send your new email address to someone or someone misses the email. However, it may also help to send another reminder from your new email address.
Automatic replies
Automatic replies, or out-of-office replies, are another great way to make sure everyone knows about your new email address. This service automatically replies to every email sent to your old email address with a note informing the sender of your new email address.
A serious disadvantage of this method is that all emails you receive are automatically answered. This means that every SPAM message will receive a reply with your new email address. Some services also require your consent before your new email address is sent. However, many companies reply to the email address with your new email address in the body of the message.
email forwarding
Email forwarding is another service provided by many ISPs and email providers that automatically forwards email to your new email address. However, this service has several disadvantages (listed below) that should be considered first.
If you want to install this service on a legacy email address, contact your ISP or email provider to find out if it’s available. You can also log into your old email account and personally configure email forwarding in your account settings.
My old email address has expired or been terminated, what should I do?
Unfortunately, you can only create a new email address. Almost all companies that automatically expire or terminate your account due to inactivity do not reactivate the email address.
If you pay for your email or have one through your ISP, it may be suspended due to late or non-payment. Your email can often be reactivated after receipt of payment.
Unfortunately, if your address book is eventually saved and kept under your old email account, it is also lost permanently.
My email address has a spelling mistake, can it be changed?
Unless you are at a school or workplace that has policies that allow you to change your email address, restrictions do not allow you to change it. To change the email address, you must create a new one.
Can I make my email look like it came from another domain?
Although you can spoof your email address, you will not receive replies as they will all be sent to the address you are spoofing. To send and receive emails from another domain, you need an email forwarding service to send and receive emails from other domains.
advice
Most email services and providers can be configured to automatically forward all incoming email to an external address. Before looking for an email forwarding provider, check with your current provider if you only want to redirect email to a different address.
