In Microsoft Excel, a boxplot uses charts to show groups of numeric data across five values, called quartiles. Boxplot charts can be “dressed” with whiskers, which are vertical lines extending from the chart boxes. Whiskers indicate variability outside the upper and lower quartiles.
Box and whisker plots are typically used to present information from related datasets rather than independent sources such as: B. Test results between different schools or dates before and after changes to a process or system.
In recent versions of Excel, you can use the Insert Chart tool to create a box and whisker chart. Although older versions of Excel don’t have a box and whisker chart generator as such, you can create one by converting a stacked column chart to a box chart and adding the whiskers. .
These instructions apply to Excel 2019, Excel 2016, Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2013, and Excel 2010.

Make a simple chart in Excel, then add the whiskers.
Add the best whisker
The whiskers on a box-and-whisker plot indicate variability outside the upper and lower quartiles. Any data point falling outside of the upper or lower whisker line would be considered an outlier during data analysis.
- Select the top box and then select Add a chart element on the graphic design Tab.
- Choose error bars and choose More error bar options. The website Format error bars open for.
- Choose plus sous Direction in error bar options.
- Choose personalization and choose specify value in which Error amount section. The website Custom error bars open for.

Once you’ve added the upper whiskers, you can add the lower whiskers in the same way.
- Select the bottom box and choose Add a chart element on the graphic design Tab.
- Choose error bars and choose More error bar options. The website Format error bars open for.
- Choose Fewer sous Direction in error bar options.

- Choose Show middle markers to display the mean marker of the data series.
- Choose Show average line to show the line connecting the means of the boxes in the data series.
- Choose a method quartile calculation:
- Including median included in the calculation if the number of values in the data is odd.
- Exclusive median is excluded from the calculation if the data contains an odd number of values.
- Select the following field on your chart to customize Formats data series and repeat the process for the other fields.
