How to fix problems in Windows after installing new software

Updated 6/30/2020

If you encounter problems with your Windows operating system after installing new software, the following steps can help to solve them.

Reinstall or uninstall the program

If you’re having problems with your computer or other programs after installing new software on your computer, uninstall the program and see if the problems persist.

note

If you cannot boot into Windows after installing a program, try booting into Safe Mode.

Once the program is uninstalled, try installing it again.

Check for software updates or new versions

If you continue to have problems, check the software manufacturer’s website for updates for the program, game, or utility you are installing.

If you are installing software or drivers for hardware such as a printer, obtain the latest software and drivers from the manufacturer’s website. Do not install software and drivers from a CD or floppy disk that came with the hardware, as these are often outdated. Our drivers page provides links to different types of hardware drivers.
