Why is Drawer pronouncing a draw?
So what about “to draw?” To be fair to my New York friends, most Americans pronounce “Drawer‘ in an ‘illogical’ way. The word technically has two morphemes (smallest units of meaning): to draw + er, suggest a container that can be “drawn” from**. But many pronounce it as if it rhymed (ie had a morpheme) with “lore”.
Why is drawing pronounced Drawring?
This non-standard pronunciation is the result of the “over-application” of a rule that pronunciation of most British dialects, stating that the final “r” in a word is silent unless followed by a vowel.
