How to show the number of words in a word

When you work on blog posts, technical manuals, academic papers, and other documents, you may need to know how many words the document contains or how many characters the title contains. Microsoft Word offers several ways to get an accurate count of the number of words or characters in a document. Word also calculates the number of words or characters in selected blocks of text.

The instructions in this article apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010, and Word Online.

How to turn on word count in Word:

  • Open Word.

  • Right-click the status bar at the bottom of the window.

  • Choose number of words.

  • The word count for the entire document is displayed in the status bar.

    In Word for the web, if you don’t see the word count at the bottom of the window, select Change the document and choose Edit in Word Online.

  • To see the word count for a specific selection, highlight the text you want to count.

  • More information on word count:

  • Open the Word document.

  • Step aside revue Tab.

  • In which examination group, choose number of words.

  • Le number of words The number of pages, number of words, number of characters, number of paragraphs and number of lines are displayed in the dialog box. You can choose not to include text boxes, footnotes, and endnotes.

  • To use a keyboard shortcut to view word count and other information:

  • Open the Word document.

  • To press ctrlchangeG.

  • In which number of words and delete the dialog Add text boxes, footnotes, and endnotes Check the box if you don’t want to include them in the word count.

  • Choose Close when you’re done

  • To count part of the words in a document in Word for Mac, select the text you want to count, go to Tool then select number of words.

    Another way to view a document’s word count in Word is to add a field to the document.

    To show the number of words in a field:

  • Place the cursor where you want the word count to appear.

  • Step aside insertion Tab.

  • In which text group, select Fast gamesthen choose domain.

  • In which field names list, select number wordsthen select OK.

  • Right-click in the field and select it update field to update the word count.

  • Word automatically updates the word count when you print the file. Choose dossier > options > For viewingthen step aside Options d’impression and select Update the fields before printing.
