In November 2020, three men, now 29, 31 and 44 years old, attacked the post office in Oberdorf BL and escaped with a total of nearly 35,000 francs. But not too far. They were arrested three weeks after the crime. This week, three Italians had to answer for a crime in the Basel Criminal Court in Muttenz.

As reported in the Basler Zeitung (paid article), three men are at risk of deportation if found guilty. The prosecution demands six and five years in prison for the two main perpetrators. For the oldest of the three, who had been involved in the preparation of the coup shortly before the crime was committed, the prosecution ordered a three-year partial suspension.

The getaway car was stolen and set on fire

According to the indictment, the two main perpetrators drove to the post office the morning of the crime with the stolen Subaru Impreza 2.0 GX 4WD, and one driver did not even have a valid driver’s license at the time of the crime. After two younger men broke into the Oberdorf post office in the early morning and armed, they hid in the ladies’ restroom and waited for staff to arrive. After being overwhelmed, handcuffed and gagged on the first employee, they forced an employee who arrived later to open the cash register and threatened her with a pistol.

Earlier, both men asked a gagged woman to open a safe. With gestures, pen and paper, she indicated that the safe could only be opened 45 minutes later. However, the perpetrators were too early to rob the safe. Eventually they had to settle for cash from the counter drawers and left the post office through the window through which they had entered after strapping the employee to the chair.

They set fire to the stolen Subaru near a shooting range outside the village to destroy any evidence, then continued to escape in the borrowed van. It belonged to the suspect’s former employer. He borrowed a van from his ex-boss on the pretext that he needed it to move.

The delivery truck was their undoing

A fired getaway car was fatal to mail thieves. A passerby noticed a burning car and recognized a delivery truck with the company’s logo nearby, from which the suspects then fled. The vehicle’s GPS data later provided vital information about the course of the events. The handcuffs clicked three weeks after the attack.

The prosecutor accuses the men of unnecessary brutality. According to BaZ, the injured worker still suffers from the consequences and can no longer work normally, the prosecutor explained in his allegation. The two main defendants have asked the court to refrain from expelling them from the country and declare them difficult cases because they have children in Switzerland. The main suspect was arrested by his father. The criminal court is expected to issue its verdict on June 23.
