  • On one page, users can automatically make phone calls between Russian politicians and secret service agents.

  • The relevant phone numbers are leaked.

  • Through action, the art collective wants to ensure civil resistance against the war.

The collective of artists calling themselves “Darkened Dreams of Scheherazade” (Tods) stages a special kind of civil resistance against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The website “wasterussiantime.today” (a waste of Russian time) created by the collective automatically connects members of the Russian secret services, members of the army and politicians as soon as a button is clicked. It remains hidden from contacts that they are connected to each other from the outside – the whole thing is essentially a large-scale telephone joke.

The resulting confusion is primarily intended to waste the time of those involved. “If you’re on the phone, you can’t throw bombs. He can’t coordinate the soldiers. I can’t make invasion plans, ”writes Tods on the German version of the site. “First of all, it brings a little more chaos to the Russian government – we can distract and play,” he said. The site had already registered over 5,200 calls as of May 19.

Databases are constantly being expanded

Even talking to Russians is impossible, but you should be able to listen to surprised or angry voices. About 5,000 of the phone numbers in use are from the leak, Tages-Anzeiger writes. And collective members continually replenish their databases if users have additional data sources at their disposal.

Will the action lead to a further escalation of the already hot situation? The art collective itself answers this question on its website: “There are tanks driving in the streets, there are air raids, and soldiers are walking along the streets with weapons in their hands. Calls from the civilian side will certainly not lead to further escalation. It’s a form of social resistance. “
