According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly one million older vehicles worldwide due to possible brake problems. Accordingly, this applies to ML, GL and R class cars manufactured between 2004 and 2015, the office informed in its vehicle recall database. Germany probably has almost 70,000 cars.

In the worst case, corrosion of the brake booster can break the connection between the brake pedal and the brake system. “As a result, the service brake is failing,” informed the Federal Office. On Saturday, the manufacturer in Stuttgart, on request, announced that the affected cars’ brake booster could no longer function properly due to corrosion at the casing joints – which resulted in a case-by-case review.

Under certain conditions, corrosion can lead to leakage of the brake booster and the activation of a reduced brake booster. As a result, the brake pedal forces required to brake the vehicle will increase and the braking distance is likely to be longer.

«Hissing sounds felt»

“There may be a perceptible hiss or flow noise as you apply the brake,” said the Federal Office. Mercedes confirmed the information ex officio, according to which, in extreme cases, braking the vehicle with the service brake may no longer be possible. “This would increase the risk of accidents or injuries,” said a spokesman.

Mercedes-Benz will start checking the cars immediately. “Until the exam, please stop using the vehicle.” If necessary, the manufacturer will propose solutions for handles. In mid-May, Mercedes-Benz announced a recall campaign in the US due to brake problems on the good 292,000 ML, GL and R 2006-2012 cars.
