The study identified the most child-friendly cities in Europe. Several Swiss cities also made it to the top 30 – one of them was even in 11th place.

In the study, the Preply language learning app identified the best European cities for starting a family. Over 130 cities were analyzed in three categories: education, health and safety, and leisure and lifestyle. The study compared factors such as length of parental leave, recreational areas and free health care. The top 30 also includes four Swiss cities.

The Portuguese city of Funchal in Madeira ranks first in the overall ranking. It deserves a top position with the lowest crime rate, low air pollution and low cost of living. And the very good quality of education also helps Funchal to win.

Switzerland is also clearly represented in the study with four cities. Bern is by far the best, as it barely skips the ten most child-friendly cities in Europe and ranks eleventh. Geneva came 15th, Lausanne 17th, followed by Basel in 19th place.

Zurich is still in the top 30, but lags behind other cities, ranking 26th. The city fares worse than others, especially in terms of leisure and lifestyle.

London ranks last in the overall ranking. The reasons for this are very high crime rates, high air pollution and the lack of educational opportunities compared to other cities.
