Working as an engineer attracted Mathias Manser of St. Gallen to China. Emigration was not planned until he fell in love. He now lives with his family in Wuxi and bakes Swiss fondue bread there.
Mathias Manser would never have thought that one day he would live with his wife and son in a metropolis of 7 million in China. The engineer loves the Swiss mountains and nature too much. Manser spends every free minute on alpine hikes.
Until his work brought him to China eight years ago where he met and fell in love with his current wife Sharon in 2016. The couple will get married in 2021, and their son Jonathan will be born 13 months ago.
The quality manager of a Swiss company in China is at home in his new home country, knows many cultural differences and can also speak Chinese at the level of small talc.
He replaced his beloved mountain hiking with water sports. His family lives in Wuxi, about 150 kilometers from Shanghai, in the Venice Garden District. You can row, swim or canoe there.
Far and wide without good bread
Mathias Manser came to his second home. He does not mind homesickness, although he longs for family and friends. And good St. Gallen: Two and a half years ago, when he wanted to eat fondue with his friends overseas, he lamented Chinese bread that was soft and sweet. The peel is also missing.
Without further ado, Mathias Manser begins experimenting with bread recipes. His apartment is converted into a bakery. This is where the Saint Galler bread and braid are made. First, she enjoys her baking art with family and friends. But soon news spread about Manser’s talent. Mathias Manser and his wife Sharon now bake every weekend, sell their products by courier and sometimes at the Wuxi Christmas market.
A fun hobby has emerged out of necessity, adding variety to Manner’s daily work: “It’s fun and my motivation is people who like our Swiss bread,” he says. About 100 loaves are made each weekend in Manson’s home bakery, his garage. With ingredients that are as natural as possible.
Although Mathias Manser did not imagine emigrating, he is completely satisfied with his new life with his wife Sharon and son Jonathan. He still has one wish: he would like to fly to Switzerland with his family so that Jonathan can finally meet his grandmother after the pandemic. But he speaks diligently with his toddler in Swiss. And dad can finally go hiking in the Alps again.
