Hundreds of fish died in the Baltschieder fish farm in the Visp district in mid-May. Now it’s clear why: according to Walliser Bote, two lab reports found poison in the water. Manure or fertilizer has entered the water. How exactly is currently unclear.
Richard Meichtry, president of the Visper Fisheries Association, told the newspaper that a ton of brown trout had died in the poisoned water. The pity is over 10,000 francs. The whole year of brown trout was swept away by the manure in the water.
For Meichtry, the emotional damage is more important than the financial damage: “We put so much heart and soul into the breeding of these animals, bred every fish from an egg, and watched it grow. It was painful to see these fish die and powerless. And it was hard to get rid of. ”
No connection with killing fish in chamois
Meichtry does not like to speculate about how the poison got into the water. It is quite possible that there is no evil intention behind it. The aim of the fishing association was to be able to rule out self-harm based on laboratory reports. “Now we have this certainty. We know we didn’t make a mistake, ”said Meichtry.
Also in mid-May, hundreds of dead brown trout were discovered at the breeding center in Gamsen VS in the Brig District. However, the cause of the death of the fish was due to two blocked pipes that prevented the fish farm from being supplied with fresh water. There is therefore no connection between the two incidents, which was confirmed by the Wallis police on a request of 20 minutes. An investigation into the death of the fish in the Baltschieder is ongoing.
