The members of Anonymous are not amateurs, but real hacking professionals, says Gazmend Huskaj, head of the Cybersecurity Department at the Geneva Center for Security Policy.

The hacker collective Anonymous announced a cyber war with Russia shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine. Since then, it has carried out several cyber attacks against the Russian National Bank, state television and several arms manufacturers. The latest action is directed against the Russian military itself, which, according to Anonymous, managed to steal secret plans and data on Russian drones. “We hope this information can end the war as soon as possible,” writes the hacking collective Twitter.
The members of Anonymous are not amateurs, but real hacking professionals, says Gazmend Huskaj, head of the Cybersecurity Department at the Geneva Center for Security Policy. “They not only paralyzed the official website of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, but also repeatedly attacked the Russian central bank.”
“The gaps in cyberspace are almost everywhere”
Huskaj can imagine that the hacking collective managed to break into parts of the Russian military. According to Huskaj, any system connected to the Internet is vulnerable to cyber attacks. “Cyberspace is a porous operational environment with gaps almost everywhere.” Anyone with the knowledge, resources, and time can find and infiltrate any Internet-connected system, including any military system.
“That is why the military around the world create units to conduct offensive and defensive operations in cyberspace. This brings benefits for intelligence, security and national security policy. ” Consequently, the military and government also realized that it was not a good idea to connect all systems to the Internet. “But even if you have systems that are separate and closed, there is always the risk of an internal threat.” This happened, for example, in 2016, when a CIA employee published sensitive data shortly before his dismissal.
Drone data brings “tactical advantage”
In fact, actions like Anonymous against the Russian military could have an impact on the course of the war, says Huskaj: “The release of classified data on Russian military drones gives the Ukrainian armed forces a tactical advantage on the battlefield. This way, the weaknesses of the drones can be exploited. ” They also embarrassed opponents and increased uncertainty about the future success rate of drone attacks.
