The Selecta machine has been operating in the Römerhof in the 7th district of Zurich since April – much to the dissatisfaction of the residents. A petition has been submitted and a request has been made to remove the machine. According to the postulate, the Selecta machine takes up “unnecessary space” and blocks the view of passers-by.

“The machine is just ugly,” says DM *, the initiator of the petition. A mother of two, who lives right next to the Römerhof, worries about the neighborhood children: “Thanks to the Selecta machine, they have easier access to unhealthy food. It tempts the children. This is the problem.”

Therefore, the 45-year-old is demanding that the machine be removed as soon as possible. So far, it has collected over 70 signatures. “However, there are some important neighborhood events coming up, where I will gather more signatures with the support of the neighborhood association.”

The Selecta machine is an abomination

According to Florian Steiner, co-chairman of the district association Hottingen, the new Selecta vending machine in Römerhof visually dominates the lavishly redesigned square without adding any value to the district. “Many in the area agree that the machine is ruining this place.”

The Selecta machine is also nasty to GLP Councilor Ann-Catherine Nabholz. Together with the city councilor AL Mischa Schiwow recently made a postulate calling on the city council to remove the Selecta machine from Römerhof as soon as possible. “We don’t use this machine in this neighborhood that only changes space,” says Nabholz. “He has to go.”

According to the city of Zurich, the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ), the civil engineering office and the construction department are responsible for approving the new Selecta machine. As no information can be given while a request is pending, both the VBZ and the city refrain from commenting.
